Dance
I had a roommate a couple years back that completely changed my life
She was a professional dancer, would fly around the world performing at festivals, coordinating dance routines, etc
I listened to her one day talk about dance, her process, and what she was currently up to
Note: I had never danced before
I was so inspired after listening to her - I thought: “I think I may want to see what this is all about”
There was a historic ballroom dance venue near where I was living in Irvine, California, called Atomic Ballroom - people would drive over an hour to this place to learn how to dance, and to social dance afterward
I put on a collared shirt, some shoes, and drove over there on a Saturday - there was a special introductory event that they were holding
“I don’t have a partner, what do I do? Where do I go?” - I go to the front desk, and say
“No, it’s fine - we all switch partners anyway”
Long story, short - I had one of the best times of my life
So much so, that I stayed there from 12 noon to 8 pm - learning some basic steps - so much fun
Lindy hop, salsa, rumba, Argentine tango, walz, balboa, west coast swing, country, bachata, etc
8 hours
All kinds of music - All kinds of steps
Complete culture shock
It’s also for all ages
I saw this one couple - this man was at least 80 years old - phenomenal tango dancer
You can dance your entire life
These 2 films are good ones to watch:
I liked the experience so much, I joined monthly, and kept going a few times a week for months
I liked lindy hop, and tango the best, while I was going - those are the classes I remember taking the most
If this post seems off topic, these schmucks have removed dance from our culture, ON PURPOSE - The majority of people in the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s, even later, knew how to do at least one cultural dance
What happened?
I wrote an entire post about it here
Talk soon
Sincerely,
Mike
